This listing is NOT a comprehensive listing of places we are welcome in the Greenville area - it is places I have discovered and enjoy going to.

Typically, a restaurant goes in these listings if, aside from good food and good service, they have a comfortable smoking section - that is, actual dining tables where one can eat and smoke. I don't typically care if those tables are in a bar area or an actual dining room, as long as they are comfortable tables, not bar tables (tiny, high tables that only really accommodate drinks). I might have a few exceptions, however, like smoking only at a bar or on a well-sheltered and comfortable outdoor area, if the place is unique and exceptional.

I will declare this to any restaurant owner who reads this: If you’re going to accommodate smokers, make them explicitly welcome and comfortable. This means that your smoking policy (where exactly is the smoking section) is clearly communicated to all patrons and that you have ashtrays on the tables where smoking is allowed.

To not follow this policy invites some smoke-hating fool to sit down next to you, suddenly notice you're smoking, and bitch about it. It also discourages the shy smoker from enjoying himself and fails to give an establishment feedback on who's patronizing the place.

Anyway, no listing goes on this website unless I have visited it personally.

Well, they were accurate when I posted them. Sometimes, however, I fail to get to a place for a while and, well, things can change for the worse.

Below the Name in these listings is either a date of last visit or a statement of how frequently I go there. I try and keep them updated, but it isn’t always practical.

I suggest, with any listing, you call the place yourself and confirm you can smoke. If they say no, try describing what I have described and they might say, "oh, yeah, you can smoke at those tables". I also suggest that you thank that establishment for allowing smoking - if they know you care, they will continue to accommodate us.

I have a day job unrelated to anything on this website and only eat out for dinner or visit bars occasionally, so if you know of a great place that accommodates smoking, write me and tell me. Include name, phone number and what you like about it. Also give me an idea of where it is. I am particularly interested in Thai, Indian, Chinese that includes Dim Sum dishes, Sushi and Fine Dining. DON’T write me about cheap chains or grease pits. Use the below email link:

The actual City of Greenville crammed a smoking ban down our throats from January to April 2007. Then, it was dismissed by a judge. Between then and April 2008, some places began allowing smoking again, as they saw a complete ban as bad for business.

Then, on March 31st, 2008,  The State Supreme Court, in an act of Judiciary incompetence, reinstated the ban. Apparently, actual state law eludes their abilities (click HERE for complete details).

So now, barring future action FOR freedom by the state or the City of Greenville (which is exceedingly unlikely unless we, en masse, demand it), all places within the City of Greenville are unfriendly to us as forced by the City Government. There will be no listings for them here.

Note, however, that an address saying Greenville can and does simply denote the County of Greenville in these listings.

Greenville County and surrounding Counties do NOT allow alcohol service on Sundays (and, poof, my soul is saved, apparently). The only three exceptions to this are the City of Greenville, the City of Mauldin and Private Clubs. Understand that, unless I indicate it, assume the place does not serve booze on Sundays.

If a listing here suddenly disappears, that means that either the establishment’s quality has suddenly plummeted or the establishment has banned us completely from the place. At that point, I won’t give them any advertising, so instead of announcing that they are now bad or unfriendly, I will simply de-list them... and they will be dead to me.
