This alert is a GOOD alert! After two years of individual scientists, critical laymen and a variety of groups recognizing the sheer stupidity of Ex-Surgeon General Richard Carmona’s 2006 Report on ETS, several groups have now actively filed complaints with the Office of Research Integrity (ORI).

First, the grand old organization of Individual Liberties, FORCES INTERNATIONAL, has been carefully filing detailed complaints over the past year. See their work at:

FORCES complaint to the ORI

Now, last week, Four separate freedom groups, spanning the United States from New Hampshire, Ohio, Wisconsin and Hawaii, have all filed complaints against the SG Report. In these cases, each groups has focused on specific problems with the report’s integrity, from the actual mis-use of science, to the omission of major health studies that did not support the report’s conclusions, to the omission of economic impact studies that did not support the report’s findings.

Included in these complaints is an attack on Carmona’s oft-quoted “there is no safe level of ETS” - a statement that is toxicologically impossible and has been used as the rallying cry for municipalities and states to take away our freedoms.

This recent development warrants celebration because this action actually generated buzz and was picked up by some news organizations.

Individual Links to each complaint (some links go the group’s websites, some links download the complaint in PDF format) are presented below:

Hawaii Smoker’s Alliance ORI Complaint

Ban the Ban Wisconsin ORI Complaint

Citizen’s Freedom Alliance ORI Complaint

Now, let us all hope that the ORI does it job, sees what millions of critically minded people have seen and discredit the SG’s 2006 report for what it is - a dishonest report intended solely as fuel to take our freedoms away.

If you want to help out in this fight, I suggest you contact any of the organizations listed above.  Opponents of Ohio Bans spearheaded the press releases for this event, so they are your best bet for starters:

I would also like to say that many worked hard to get these complaints finished and filed - not just the four groups listed above, but a great many scientists, researchers and laymen who volunteered their time, to their abilities, to verify the accuracy and content of these complaints. To these self-less and unnamed individuals I say thank you.
